Chiropractic and Improved Athletic Performance
Sports medicine is a proven program that can be applied to reduce muscular dysfunction and help patients move, feel and live better. We use dynamic, innovative, evidence-based solutions to help our patients get over the pain and back in the game.
Your nervous system controls all movement, reactions, and reflexes; and is responsible for storing movement patterns. During training for any sport, the practiced movement becomes ingrained in your lower brain (cerebellum). Disturbances in your nervous system (Subluxations) slow and distort the information that is sent throughout your body. Chiropractic adjustments remove disturbances so you will perform to your absolute highest ability. This may mean the difference between winning and losing. Chiropractic care is that extra edge that will get you to the top of your game.

Dr. Wheeler uses the following techniques and procedures, among others, to address patient's sport injuries issues:
Active Release Technique (ART)
A few of the many conditions that can be treated with Active Release Technique:
|
These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
This causes your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. While necessary for healing, scar tissue may stick to adjacent structures restricting range of motion and may cause compression over nerves or blood vessels, thus causing pain. ART is a patented, soft tissue system-based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. The technique is designed to release both tight muscles and tightness or adhesions in the connective tissue surrounding muscles and joints. Tension is applied in a specific location in the muscle and direction while the patient is actively moving the joint through the range of motion. These treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are unique to ART and allow Allendale Chiropractic Clinic to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. |
Trigger Point Massage
Trigger point therapy can be very effective for treating many common muscular conditions and injuries and typically it works well for conditions such as:
|
Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release, i.e., applying direct pressure to the point until the pain and muscle tightness subside. In this type of therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing, as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.
It’s a great tool for many issues to unlock an area, but it’s also great to increase circulation and help muscles regain full function. The results and benefits of trigger point massage are releasing constricted areas in the muscles, thus alleviating pain. Receiving the therapy on a regular basis can help naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries. |
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
Most common conditions that TENS therapy is used to treat are:
|
TENS is a drug-free method of pain relief that is used to treat a wide variety of muscle and joint problems, as well as many other painful conditions. And the therapy can be used to treat both chronic (long lasting) and acute (short-term) pain, increasing muscle strength, and promoting blood supply to the area.
TENS uses electrical impulses to stimulate the nerve endings at or near the site of pain and sends signals to the brain that "scramble" normal pain perception, diminishing the pain and replacing it with a tingling or massage like sensation. |
Other Physiotherapy Modalities used include:
- R.I.C.E. Treatment: (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) for the early treatment of bone injury or acute soft tissue injuries such as a sprain or strain. It can be helpful for sports injuries, closed fractures, and degenerative joint problems.
- Rehabilitation/Exercises: Stretches and exercises to improve or maintain structure and function and decrease the likelihood of re-injury.
